Legislative Scorecard:
The 2008 legislative session in Saint Paul got off to a productive start. The House and Senate approved two landmark measures – a ballot proposal to invest in conservation for the next 25 years and a comprehensive transportation funding proposal – in the first three weeks of work. Thus they checked off two of the top items that Conservation Minnesota and coalition partners had put on the 2008 agenda.
Minnesotans who care about our state’s natural resources can be pleased that state leaders recognized the need for greater investment in our outdoor heritage. But the session was far from a total victory, marred by missed opportunities to reduce global warming pollution and a failure to invest in alternative fuel sources that wean us from our dependence on foreign oil. Governor Pawlenty’s veto pen prevented actions that would protect Minnesota families from harmful chemicals found in paint and other widely used consumer products.
